Let's Get Moving: A success story

In 2006 Raymond, in his late 50's had a total knee replacement after a few years of arthritis which had limited his activity. Previously Raymond had been a keen league badminton player, runner and cyclist. However, Raymond had to accept that most of his former sports were no longer recommended or suitable but couldn't seem to find any safe alternatives.
His weight increased over the following years and even the 2 hours voluntary dog walking, he did each week didn't reverse this. Raymond also suffers with depression and felt this had worsened since his ability to exercise had decreased.
Late summer 2011 saw Raymond getting in touch with Stuart Symonds at Let's Get Moving after being recommended by his GP. Let's Get Moving is a partnership between the IWPCT and the IW Rural Community Council, to provide one-to-one support to adults who would like to become more active, and improve their health, but don't know where to start.
Raymond's activity plan included; increasing dog walking to as much as 4 hours a week, finding a more intense but joint-safe exercise class once a week, and getting his bike checked over for roadworthiness (it had been quite some time since it was last ridden!). He also contacted an adult swimming instructor to get some coaching, and started swimming.
After 8 weeks Raymond had improved his GPPAQ (a measure of physical activity) from moderately inactive to active. This has been achieved by realizing all of his plans: he walks dogs for the RSPCA for two long sessions a week; he attends a circuit fitness training session weekly, he regularly rides his bike and plans to replace it in the Spring. Quite impressively he has improved his swimming technique to such a level that his instructor has invited him to swim with the local masters swimming club.
Raymond thinks that his depression has been better controlled recently giving him the energy to be much more physically active. His general sense of wellbeing has improved. This is a general trend seen by referrals to Let's Get Moving, particularly amongst men. Digital Switchover Community Grants

Are you involved in your local community? Would you like help get the message about the digital switchover out to people in your area?
TV across the UK is going digital, the switchover dates for the Isle of Wight are 7th and 21st of March. After the final switchover date, people who only have analogue TV equipment will not be able to receive the new digital signal so they need to take action now to convert their TV to digital or they will lose channels. For more information to help you switch look at the Digital UK website www.digitaluk.co.uk <http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/>
We can give talks to volunteers and provide literature about switchover in a wide range of formats.
We may be able to provide a small grant to help support community awareness events about switchover , such as a coffee morning
If you are interested in helping, please contact Kay Lunn at Age Concern on 525282 or kay.lunn@aciw.org.uk
