Voluntary Sector Strategy and Compact

The Third Sector's role in Island Health Service Delivery Workshop

Wednesday 30th September, Lakeside Hotel, Wootton

Presentations and notes from this workshop to explore how the voluntary and community sector and Isle of Wight Primary Care Trust can work together more effectively are vailable on the RCC website

The Isle of Wight Voluntary Sector Stategy was adopted by the IW Council in April 2009.

The Isle of Wight Council and the Isle of Wight NHS, together with the Isle of Wight Rural Community Council and the Voluntary Sector Cabinet, have asked Island residents, including our voluntary and community organisations (VCOs), how we can create a thriving third sector on the Isle of Wight.
This strategy reflects what people have told us. It sets out what we want to achieve and a way of meeting the many national and local objectives for our community including Eco Island, our Sustainable Community Strategy.

A summary of the strategy is avaliable to download directly here

Potential new grant making process

The Island's new strategy for creating a thriving third sector is being rolled-out in a number of areas. This week, a new webpage has been published that will tell the story of a major part of the strategy; how a potentially new grant-making process is being tested in 2 service areas. If successful the pilots will lead to broader grant making arrangements between the IW Council and the Island's third sector organisations. It will also help the Council and its public sector partners invest more in the delivery of more of their mainstream local public services by voluntary groups and not-for-profit organisations. The webpage will be of interest to Council staff who commission services and the many third sector organisations that have an interest in future grant funding and commissioning arrangements. The page will be regularly updated and can be found here

Formally Raising a Concern under the Isle of Wight Compact

The Compact is the name given to the agreement guiding relationships between the public and voluntary and community sectors.
To support the on-going work to create an environment in which the voluntary and community sector can thrive on the Island, there is a need to ensure that any issues that may arise in dealings between the public sector and voluntary and community groups are formally reported and addressed and lessons learned.

If you have a concern that you wish to raise please complete this form in as much detail as possible and e-mail/post to either the IWRCC at mail@iwrcc.org.uk 3 Langley Court, Pyle Street, Newport PO30 1LA or to martin.johnson@iow.gov.uk post to Martin Johnson, Service Manager, Partnerships, County Hall, High Street, Newport PO30 1UD.
The reporting form can be downloaded from the RCC website here

The Compact

The Compact is the term given to the document that helps to define the relationship between the voluntary and community sector and the Government and its agencies. It is the starting point for developing and improving partnership working between the sectors based on shared values and mutual respect.

The most recent version of the local Compact was published in 2005 and previously a Compact working group existed to promote its adoption in everyday working practices.

This working group has not met regularly in the last 2 years and the current Compact document is in need of review.

Both these issues are currently being addressed and it is hoped that a new Compact Strategy Group will meet  with representatives from the Voluntary Sector Cabinet, the Isle of Wight Council and the Isle of Wight Primary Care Health Trust participating.

A copy of the 2005 compact can be viewed on the IW Council's website here
